BAGIS is a regional GIS or Geographic Information System for the Barrington Area Council of Governments and its government members. BAGIS mapping facilitates the use of spatial technologies and data access to improve intergovernmental coordination on cooperative issues. This information allows us to see patterns, manage resources and communicate more easily.
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer software system designed to manage, analyze, interpret and present data and associated attributes. It allows for mapping and visualization of spatial relationships, patterns and trends. With GIS tools, data can be edited, queried, examined, and finally the results can be used to illustrate location-based changes over time.
GIS is a dynamic system, and it evolves with the development of mapping demands. GIS plays a fundamental role in business, engineering, planning, management, logistics, and telecommunications. With its spatial analysis, modeling and prediction capabilities, GIS decision-support applications have tremendous potential for local governments.
